Scenic Art Technician

The Free Will Players Theatre Guild was formed in 1989 by a group of actors in a truly co-operative spirit with the mandate to produce the works of William Shakespeare. The company presents the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, which has grown into a professional theatre festival with an annual audience of thousands. We stage outdoor productions every summer.

The Free Will Players Theatre Guild is seeking reliable and skilled Scenic Art Technicians to join the production team for the 2026 Freewill Shakespeare Festival. This role supports the execution and maintenance of scenic painting and surface treatments and is ideal for artists with prior hands-on scenic art or paint experience who are ready to contribute within a professional production environment.


About the Role

The Scenic Art Technician assists with scenic painting, finishing, and maintenance under the supervision of the Head of Scenic Art, working in collaboration with the Production Manager and Set Designer. Scenic Art Technicians are expected to complete assigned tasks independently while supporting the overall scenic art workflow. This role emphasizes craftsmanship, collaboration, and adherence to safety standards in an outdoor festival setting.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with scenic painting and surface treatments as directed

  • Prepare, prime, paint, and finish scenic elements according to design specifications

  • Mix and match colours, apply textures, and execute finishes consistently

  • Maintain paint tools, equipment, and workspaces safely and efficiently

  • Support scenic maintenance, touch-ups, and repairs as needed

  • Communicate questions or concerns to the Head of Scenic Art or Production Manager

  • Follow all safety protocols related to paint materials, ventilation, and PPE

  • Have prior hands-on experience with scenic art, painting, or related visual arts work

  • Are comfortable working independently on assigned tasks within a production schedule

  • Are detail-oriented and attentive to safety practices

  • Enjoy collaborative, team-based theatre production

  • Are comfortable with physical work and outdoor conditions


Contract Details

  • Start Date: April 28, 2026

  • End Date: June 7, 2026

  • Compensation: $22.00 per hour

  • Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
