Freewill Treasurer
We're looking for diverse, new voices wanting to make an impact on the annual Freewill Shakespeare Festival. The board of The Free Will Players Theatre Guild, producers of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival, is looking for an individual to fill the role of Treasurer. Below is a description of the Treasurer ‘s position and responsibilities. These were prepared by our current Treasurer, who has also agreed to mentor the incoming Treasurer. What is a Treasurer?
The role of Treasurer with Freewill is a rewarding experience. The Treasurer ensures that the organization’s resources are managed responsibly, enabling The Free Will Player's Theatre Guild to fulfill our mandate of making Shakespeare accessible and affordable to the Edmonton community regardless of age, ability, education, or income. This position offers the unique opportunity to work closely with passionate board members, staff, and volunteers, translating creative vision into sustainable action through sound financial planning and oversight. The Treasurer’s contributions directly impact our ability to stage productions, support artists, and engage audiences. The sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing the theatre thrive makes serving as Treasurer a truly gratifying experience.

The Treasurer should possess strong organizational and financial management skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to transparency and accountability. Their stewardship is essential to the success and sustainability of our organization.
Responsibilities
The Treasurer of Freewill is responsible for the following tasks:

Financial Oversight

Monitor the organization’s financial status and prepare monthly Treasurer Reports (Financial Updates) to the Board of Directors.

Track actual income and expenses against the approved budget.

Review Monthly Journal Entries

Budgeting and Planning
-
Review annual budgets prepared by the Managing Director. This is done in collaboration with other board members.

Financial Reporting

Prepare and present financial statements from QuickBooks for board meetings.

Banking and Cash Management

Authorize payments and maintain appropriate internal controls.

Compliance and Governance
-
Ensure timely filing of all required government documents with the Managing Director (e.g., annual returns, tax filings).

Identify and manage financial risks, ensuring appropriate accounting controls are in place.

Audit and Risk Management

Support the Managing Director with the annual Audit

Attend meetings with Auditors as the Treasurer of the Board
