The Free Will Players Theatre Guild is seeking a motivated and adaptable Production Assistant to join our team for the 2026 Freewill Shakespeare Festival. This paid student position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program and is open to applicants between the ages of 15 and 30, making it ideal for someone interested in theatre production, technical operations, and live event logistics who is looking to gain hands-on experience in a collaborative artistic environment.
About the Role
The Production Assistant supports the successful delivery of the Freewill Shakespeare Festival by assisting across multiple production and operational departments. Reporting to the Production Manager and working closely with the Artistic Director, this role contributes directly to bringing the festival’s artistic vision to life.
This position is designed as a mentored learning opportunity, offering practical experience in stage operations, site preparation, technical coordination, and festival logistics. The Production Assistant will develop hands-on skills while working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment that supports both artistic and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Provide support across production departments, assisting with daily operations and responding to evolving needs
Liaise with production teams on behalf of the Production Manager and Artistic Director to support communication and workflow
Assist with load-in and installation of sets, props, and technical equipment
Participate in strike, ensuring materials and equipment are safely and efficiently returned to storage
Monitor the condition of sets, props, costumes, and festival grounds, reporting issues as needed
Support the safe operation of the festival site, following all safety protocols and procedures
Collaborate with production staff and other departments to ensure smooth festival operations
Serve as a professional and welcoming presence when interacting with patrons and community members
Participate in safety briefings and assist with emergency preparedness and response procedures

Eligibility: Must meet Canada Summer Jobs Requirements for Employment:
be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of their summer job
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job and
be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
this includes having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of their summer job
